Sadness, much like happiness, is an emotion. Since people have hearts, they can feel a range of emotions, and sadly, sorrow too. If they don’t, they are just human robots.
If someone you love had a bad day and you cannot take seeing them miserable and down-spirited, don’t just sit there. Do little things like these to cheer them up and make them feel better about themselves.
How To Make People Feel Better
#1 Be a listener: If someone is feeling sad or desolate, just go and sit with them. Ask them what’s upsetting them and encourage them to open up to you. Don’t be pushy though. Listen to them telling you about what is bothering them. At such times, all people want is someone to listen to them.
#2 Take them out: When they are having a bad day and have been in their bed or caved in their room, all they need is a change of scene to lift up their spirits. What you should do to make people feel better in such cases is take them out for dinner, drinks, or just ice cream. Going out will prove a great distraction for them.
#3 Have a Sleepover: leaving people alone when they are sad is the worst thing you can do. Sadness causes all kinds of bad thoughts to hover over in their minds. In times like these, you should accompany them. What better way of making people feel better than a good old-fashioned sleepover. Order some pizza in, get more pillows, break in your jammies, and watch a chick flick or a comedy movie.
#4 Hug them: Sometimes, a simple hug can make someone feel so much better. Hugging releases oxytocin which is a love hormone. This is one reason why people feel loved. When someone is sad, physical touch can be very assuring. You may also hold hands or get your arms around their shoulders if hugging seems too informal.
#5 Giggle ‘em up: Now would be the time to use stuff from your lame jokes book and make them laugh because they need it the most right now. Since laughter is the best medicine, get them a good dose of it even if it means you getting into a clown suit and doing crazy stuff.
#6 Cook for them: They say that the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach. The most generous thing you can do for somebody is cooking a meal for them. You don’t have to be a gourmet chef to do that. It is the gesture that counts. Just fix them a PBJ or their favorite comfort food like noodles to make them feel better.
#7 Take a walk: Get them some fresh air. Take a walk or hit a gym with them because you know what? Doing physical exercise release endorphins which is a ‘feel good’ hormone. It will instantly make them feel good about themselves and boost with confidence.
#8 Get hammered: If nothing helps, getting drunk together definitely will. Get dressed and go out for drinks. If they are not in a mood, you can do your tequila shots right in your home. Tequila will help them forget all the worries in the world.
#9 Show your support: Sometimes, people get lost and don’t know what they are doing with life. They can end feeling like a failure. This is the time they need you the most. So, be their biggest fan and cheer ‘em up. Tell them what a great person they are.
#10 Text them: If you are away and cannot be with them right away, the least you can do is send them a cute text. Just let them know you are thinking about them and how awesome you think they are. Or better, send them flowers.
