Why do Muslims celebrate Eid?

Eid-al-Fitr is the conclusion of a month-long fasting during Ramadan. Muslims are not allowed to fast during this day. Eid al Fitr is the ‘festival of breaking the fast’. People have a lavish feast to culminate the month of Ramadan and welcome the 10th month of Islamic calendar, Shawwal. This is why we celebrate Eid. It was started by Prophet Muhammad. Before you go any further, you need to understand what Ramadan and Eid are.

What is the purpose of celebrating Eid al Fitr?

Ramadan or Ramzan is the ninth month of holy calendar. The reason why people fast during this season is that they observe one of the pillars of Islamic religion; faith, prayer, charity, fasting, and Hajj. It is believed that the holy teachings of Quran were received by the Prophet Muhammad during this month. Therefore, people sincere fast during the day and go to the mosque to offer their prayers to the God. After a month long fasting, everyone breaks the fast with sweet vermicelli and other delicious food items. People get together in the spirit of unity and oneness. No one is allowed to fast on the day of Eid al Fitr or during the month of Shawwal. It is absolutely shunned.

When is Eid al Fitr?

This year, Eid al fitr will be celebrated on 4th or 5th of June. This actual date depends upon the sightings of the moon of Shawwal. If you are wondering when Eid al Fitr starts, it begins in the evening when the moon comes out. When you look in the sky on that day, you will find a crescent shaped moon shining in all its glory. It is truly a sight to behold. The holiday for Eid will begin from June 3 (29 of Ramadan) to the 3rd of Shawwal.

How do we celebrate Eid ul Fitr?

Eid al Fitr is the most important festival of Muslims. On this day, people wear new clothes and go to the mosque in the morning to offer their prayers to Allah. Then, the grand feast follows. Delicious food items like sweet vermicelli and biryani is made in every household. Families have get together and celebrate unison and happiness. People exchange gifts with each other and elders offer Eidi (or money) to the kids. Joy and festivity surround the atmosphere.
