Everton midfielder Andre Gomes suffered a career-threatening injury on Sunday’s Premier League match against Tottenham. In the 79th minute, he twisted his ankle, causing a fracture dislocation that could effectively end his football career.
The injury was caused as the Tottenham forward Son Heung-min tried to tackle him, who was later found in tears as the gathered fans started baying for his blood.
How did it all happen?
During the 79th minute, Gomes was forced to ground his feet as to avoid a tackle by Son Heung-min. As he landed on his right foot, the sole remained firm on the ground but his leg turned – tearing muscles, tendons, nerves, ligaments, and the bone.
His twisted leg was too horrific to look at, and the players from both the teams were shocked to see it. Immediately they realized how severe the injury was.
After a six-minute game stoppage, when the medics attended to Gomes, he was taken to a hospital.
Son Heung-min broke into tears
South Korean international Son Heung-min was earlier given a yellow card by the referee for his tackle, but it was controversially changed to a red card as the medics arrived and referee discovered how bad the injury really was.
Son was overwhelmed by extreme guilt and regret, as he broke down in tears and his teammates tried to console him.
Fans started baying for Heung-min’s blood
Later when Heung-min was moving out of the terf, the fans started baying for his blood, with a lot of shouts and screams directed at him. He had to escorted out as he continued sobbing.
His teammate Dele Alli, addressed the press later, defending Son:
Son is devastated, he’s in tears but it’s not his fault. He’s one of the nicest people you would want to meet and he’s not like that. He can’t even lift his head up he’s crying that much in the dressing room.
What does it mean for Gomes’s career?
Doctors say that there was no way to prevent this injury, no amount of exercise or diet or training could have stopped the ligament tear in this situation.
While doctors have confirmed a fracture dislocation in Andre Gomes’s right ankle, with significant damages to the bone, ligament, nerves, muscles, tendons.
Doctors say that the bones healing back won’t be an issue at all since bones usually heal fast in a proper fashion.
It’s not so much how the bones will heal when you have a fracture, as much as it is how the muscles, the nerves and the tendons and ligaments can be damaged whenever you have these types of injuries.
In conclusion, there is still hope for Andre Gomes
“What’s harder to recover from is the damage to the ligaments in the ankle that can get torn, if there’s been damage to the muscle or the nerves, those are the things that are ultimately going to determine how well someone is able to come back from this type of injury,” added the doctors.
We’ve seen this type of injury in other sports and we’ve seen athletes come back from it. You can come back from these injuries.
