Whenever you’re dehydrated, your body tells us to drink water, but did you know drinking plain water might not be the best thing to do? And, a research study by St.Andrews University, Scotland says so.
It is believed that drinks with a small amount of sugar, salt, fat or protein are better for keeping you hydrated for longer periods.
#1. Coconut Water
Containing 95% water, Coconut water is healthier than most fruit juices and sports drinks. It has natural sugars and a perfect balance of minerals and electrolytes. It is low in sodium and high in potassium, so it helps in better hydration. Make sure to drink coconut water without added sugars or flavours.
#2. Milk
Most people see milk as a heavy drink, but the reality is different. Milk is one of the best beverages for weight loss and one of the best beverages for having a good night’s sleep.
Milk is better than water at hydrating as it has sugar lactose along with some fat and protein, which keeps you full and hydrated for a longer period. Milk also contains sodium, which reduces urine and holds water inside your body.
#3. Fruit-Infused Water
Just add some fresh slices of your favourite fruits to your glass of water. Many people prefer adding lime with basil, or cucumber with mint. But there are no rules here, add anything you want – oranges, lemons, pineapples, strawberries etc. It supplies the water with small amounts of sugar and electrolytes, and enhances its hydrating power – plus, you get fruity nutrition.
#3. Fruit/Vegetable Juice
Juices of fruits such as watermelon, orange, pineapple, pomegranate, grape are healthy and hydrating in the best way possible. Vegetable juices such as cucumber and beet are even healthier, although their taste might want you to add some sugar to it.
But these juices should be drunk without sugar, as sugar pulls water from the body for it to digest and can cause dehydration.
#4. Caffeine-Free Herbal Teas
As long as your tea is herbal and caffeine-free, it is a great way to rehydrate, and it works better than water. You can have your teas hot or cold, whether they are herbal, black, green, or chamomile – they are full of antioxidants and electrolytes.
#6. Aloe Water
Aloe water is packed with electrolytes, antioxidants and minerals that does a great job of rehydrating your body. It also has powerful regenerative properties, it is perfect for detoxifying and it heals and repairs the damage to the body. Aloe water is just the magic potion you need on most days.
#7. Chlorophyll Water
These innovative drinks are made by infusing water with natural fruit essence and chlorophyll that comes from the green leaves. Chlorophyll water comes in various flavours like blueberry and watermelon so it’s delicious to drink. And it has more antioxidants than four cups of Spinach.
#8. Lemonade
Lemonade is the most ancient rehydration drink, it is rich in Vitamin C, electrolytes, and sodium. Although, make sure that your lemonade doesn’t have too much sugar in it if you are drinking it to hydrate your body. Remember, sugar needs water to get digested and so it pulls water into the stomach and caused dehydration.
#9. Oral Rehydration Salt solutions
Oral rehydration salt solutions contain small amounts of sugar, sodium, and potassium – that retain the water within the body by reducing urine production.
Note: While these drinks are better than water at hydrating your body, water is still the most suitable drink on ordinary days when you are not excessively dehydrated.
