2019 Rewind: Top 10 Most Followed Celebrities on Instagram

Instagram has quickly become the favourite platform for celebrities as people’s attention span has dwindled to that of a goldfish and we have moved towards a world of seeking instant gratification and fun.

Instagram is where people show what they are doing, where they are, what they are thinking – and as 2019 is passing, the following of celebrities has kept mounting.

We have made a list of celebrities with the maximum number of followers in 2019:

#1. Cristiano Ronaldo – 192 million followers

His journey from Manchester United to Real Madrid and then to Juventus has earned him plenty of haters but also got him new fans. And while there may be perpetually unsettled debate about who is the better player between Ronaldo and Messi, Ronaldo is a clear winner in terms of followers who amount up to a whopping 192 million.

In fact, Ronaldo earns more from his Instagram posts than by playing Football.

#2. Ariana Grande – 168 million followers

Apart from adopting a forever young barbie doll persona and appropriating Black culture, Ariana Grande is actually an incredibly talented singer and performer.

She can even mimic and sing exactly like pop icons such as Britney Spears, Rihanna, Shakira, Celine Dion, and Whitney Houston – as she did on a SNL segment. Another time, she did such a perfect Jennifer Lawrence that Chris Pratt was blown away.

No surprise, she is famous on Instagram with 168 million followers.

#3. Dwayne Johnson – 164 million followers

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has appeared in more than 300 films, and he also holds two world records to his name in the Guinness Book of World Records.

  1. Highest number of selfies taken in 3 minutes – 105 selfies
  2. Maximum signing amount for a debut artist – $5.5 million

And he is loved by people all across the world, as his 164 million followers welcomed his son recently, also called as “The Pebble.”

#4. Selena Gomez – 163 million

Selena Gomez made her debut in 2002, and she has been rising ever since. Apart from being a successful pop singer, she is also the Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF.

She is trailing behind The Rock, and is almost about to catch up – with her 163 million followers.

#5. Kim Kardashian – 153 million followers

Leaving aside all the unsolved mysteries of the world, there is the mystery of people like Kim Kardashian getting so many followers despite her producing not a single thing of value or meaning. What is the contribution of Kardashians to the world except adding oodles of garbage to an already gigantic pile, we may never know.

But here she is, with 153 million followers who watch the Kardashians doing innane antics and somehow they love it. Ugh.

#6. Kylie Jenner – 152 million

She boasted of being a “self-made billionaire” when money and fame and connections were literally handed down to her as stepping stones to “success”. She continuously posts pictures of herself, her makeup, her jewellery, and her handbags – showing off how much more she has than everyone else in a world where billions can’t even afford to live.

Kardashians and Jenners are the kind of people who’d tell a hungry person to “eat cake if you can’t afford bread.” But we all know what happened to Marie Antoinette, don’t we?

Kylie was the record holder for the most liked photo of all time, until a random egg beat her with 54 million likes.

At least Kylie had the best halloween costume of the 2019.

#7. Leo Messi – 138 million

Leonel Messi might be the greatest (arguably) footballer of all time, but in terms of fan following and endorsements he has always been trailing behind Ronaldo. Perhaps that’s because he doesn’t spend his time in bravado and machismo, and rather spends his free time at home with his family.

And that’s why he is much behind Ronaldo’s 192 million followers, with his 138 million.

But Ronaldo clearly has a sore attitude because when Messi won the FIFA Men’s Player of the Year award, Ronaldo was making passive-aggressive philosophical posts on Instagram.

#8. Beyonce – 135 million

Beyonce might be past her prime now but her music still manages to inspire people and there are 135 million people in the world who still love and idolize her.

In fact, at one point of time her popularity was so high that Beyonce had her wedding in a top secret venue with tight security, like 10 other celebs on this list.

#9. Neymar Jr – 129 million

Quickly rising through the ranks of great football players, Neymar Jr has made a mark with not only his skills on the ground but also his persona on the social media posts. He posts multiple times a day to keep his fans entertained, and that’s why they keep increasing.

#10. Taylor Swift – 123 million

One of the most loved pop singers with probably the most loyal fanbase, Taylor Swift has persevered for more than a decade while her contemporaries like Katy Perry were left behind in the race. Taylor Swift loves her fans, and they love her equally in return – as she never fails to show her affection for them.

Even her new album was a gift to her fans as she filled the songs with clues about her wedding that is going to happen very soon.
