One of the most important days of the year for women all over the world – the International Women’s Day on 8th March was marred by unfortunate events all over the world.
As women took out marches in Mexico, Iraq, Pakistan, France and many other countries – they were either attacked by the Police, or stoned by the Islamists who were offended by the idea of women having basic human rights.
On the other hand, coronavirus outbreak and subsequent lockdowns also put a damper on the special day for Women.
Islamic fascists threw shoes and stones at women’s marches in Pakistan
In Pakistan, the hardliner Islamic extremists took out a rival rally to protest against the Women’s day. As the rally of women came across the rally of hardliners, they broke through the police barrier and threw shoes and stones at the women.
In Kyrgyzstan, women were attacked by men and then Police arrested the women
In the city of Bishkek, which is the capital city of Kyrgyzstan, masked men attacked the women’s marches, and then when Police arrived – they arrested the women who were attacked. The masked men managed to get away after the assault.
In Turkey, Police fired tear gas shells at the Women’s march
In Turkey, women were marching towards the capital Istanbul’s Taksim Square, but the Police stopped them midway without giving them any legitimate reason. Eventually leading to verbal arguments after which Police started firing tear gas shells at the women to break up their crowd.
Turkish Police had fired tear gas on the women’s march during the last year as well.
Even Coronavirus couldn’t stop the women’s march in Italy
Despite being the worst-hit European country with coronavirus, with 16 million people under lockdown – celebrations and rallies and marches for women’s day were executed as planned. Coronavirus couldn’t put a damper on the spirit of Italian women.
Public events were called off in South Korea and China, due to safety reasons.
In Mexico, women went on a strike against the murder of 3,800 women by men
Mexico has had a horrific record with a record number of men murdering women. Nearly 10 men murder their wives or girlfriends every day, with the 3,800 men who murdered their spouses or love interests during the last year alone.
The government’s response to such travesty has been lackluster and most often no justice is meted out to the victims of femicide and rape.
Women’s march in Mexico this year was to implore the government into making better laws and improving their justice system. More than 21 million registered women workers in Mexico abstained from work and school for a day.
They painted the name of 3,800 victims on the street and came out in huge numbers to attend many Women’s day events.
In Chile, women were attacked by water cannons
In Chile, many protests by women were met with violence from the Police where they fired water cannons on the women’s march to disrupt the crowds.
