‘Torture’ Device That Locks Jaw Shut to ‘Tackle Obesity’

The device called DentalSlim Diet Control, a device that has been designed as an “alternative to surgical procedures” for people who are struggling with obesity. And the researchers of this device are facing criticism for creating the ‘world’s first weight loss device that locks the jaw shut’.

Developed by the University of Otago, New Zealand, DentalSlim Diet Control is a magnetic contraption that restricts the user from eating solid food by using locking bolts.

The device that is fitted to the upper and lower back teeth, allows the mouth to open up to 2mm which means breathing and talking aren’t restricted while using it.

“Participants in a Dunedin-based trial lost an average of 6.36kg [approx 14 lbs] in two weeks and were motivated to continue with their weight loss journey,” the University of Otago stated in a press release.

The lead researcher, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Otago’s Division of Health Sciences, Professor Paul Brunton explained that the device, which is fitted by a dentist can be taken off by the user with a special tool in case of an emergency, and can be repeatedly installed and removed as per their convenience.

He said the device represents “a non-invasive, reversible, economical and attractive alternative to surgical procedures.”

Despite assuring that, “there are no adverse consequences with this device” the women who trialed it reported feeling uncomfortable, unable to speak, and left feeling that “life, in general, was less satisfying”.

In a tweet, the University of Otago called it a “world-first weight-loss device to help fight the global obesity epidemic”.

However, it didn’t receive positive feedback as netizens called it a “torture device.”

One person commented: “Delete this. Delete the research team. Delete everything.”

Another comment said: “Not to be gross here but if someone vomits while wearing this they will choke to death or aspirate. Also bad for dental hygiene. Can’t brush properly or floss. Bad idea all around.”

Another criticized by saying: “And this, kids, is why ethics needs to be taught in science. Good God, I thought medicine was past these kinds of torture devices.”
