US President Donald Trump is a legendary meme in his own country, but his wife is not far behind in her own country. Slovenia really loves Melania Trump, and they never fail to show it.
Just recently, her hometown in Slovenia unveiled a bronze statue of Melania Trump.
And the reason behind it is as bizarre and hilarious as you’d expect it to be.
Her original wooden statue was burned down on the 4th of July
This bronze statue is definitely not the first for Melania. In fact, Slovenia has honored her many times before in many different ways. There used to be a wooden statue of her in her hometown. On the 4th of July, the Independence Day of USA, some anti-imperialist people burned down the wooden statue of Melania.
The original wooden statue of Melania was carved out of a single tree trunk by a local chainsaw artist named Ales Zupevc, who is also known as Maxi.
This statue showed Melania dressed in a powder blue coat, the kind she wore when Donald Trump had given his inauguration speech. Although, this statue doesn’t look anything like Melania.
This new statue is inspired by the statues of Lenin after the Russian revolution
Now, they have sculpted this bronze statue which is an exact replica of the original wooden version and will be made by American artist Brad Downey. The statue will be erected in Sevnica, which is a small town in the central part of Slovenia. This is where Melania grew up before travelling to USA and marrying the man who’d turn out to be the weirdest president of the USA. People from her hometown still remember fondly.
Even this new bronze statue has a plaque that says “the eternal memory of a monument to Melania who stood at this location.”
The artist who is making the bronze statue said:
“I didn’t think it was a good ending for the artwork, I didn’t think it was a good ending for the community.”
He also says that this new bronze statue is inspired by the statues of the Russian leader Vladimir Lenin that were installed after the Russian revolution of 1917.
He also says that this statue of Melania is “a monument that critiques monumentalism.” Make whatever you will of that irony.
This is where Melania grew up, in a Communist country
Ever since Donald Trump was elected as the President of US, tourism has increased in Slovenia. A lot of people have traveled to the town of Sevnica, where Melania grew up. Although she was born in Novo Mesto and moved to Sevnica later when Slovenia was still a part of Communist Yugoslavia.
