Stars That Shone The Brightest

Where the big night turned out to be a humbling experience for Hollywood, Netflix emerged as a stallion taking 10 trophies home. `Believed to be a competitor, Amazon also managed to clinch best motion picture comedy or musical, for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. Receiving notable Globes, Apple TV+ and Hulu also made their presence felt.

Disney’s Nomadland stole the show as the film was honored as best drama. The film’s director Chloé Zhao emerged as one of the standout winners and became the first female director to receive a Globe in 37 years.

Zhao called the film a “Pilgrimage through grief and healing” and quoted one of the nomads she met along the way who spoke about the definition of compassion as a “breakdown of all the barriers between us.”

The Shockers of The Show

Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization behind the prestigious awards was criticized in recent times for lacking Black members, voters forwarded a list of winners that was quite diverse as Andra Day received the Globe for best actress for her performance in The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Chadwick Boseman was posthumously honored as best actor for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom released by Netflix.

Where the pandemic hit cinema in the worst possible ways and Globes’ dual focus on film and television, winners also came from films like “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “The Mauritanian,” that have struggled to turn heads.

TV and Films

Appearing live from different locations, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted quite a muted Golden Globes. Talking about TV and Films sharing the stage, Poehler joked that “TV is the one that I watch five hours straight, but a movie is the one I don’t turn on because it’s two hours. I don’t want to be in front of my TV for two hours. I want to be in front of my TV for one hour, five times.”

The hosts mocking the organization behind Globes is a ritual now. The duo drew the curtains on a serious note, criticizing the group for not having Black members.

“Maybe you guys didn’t get the memo,” Fey said. “But you guys gotta change that.”
