An Egyptian diver just made a world record by staying underwater for 145 hours and 30 minutes continuously. That is more than 6 days spending inside the water, and it makes you wonder how he ate or drank or performed other bodily functions.
Here’s what you need to know about this phenomenal world record:
He could have crossed 150 hours but his medical team pulled him out
Egyptian scuba diver Saddam Al-Kilany set the new world record by breaking Cem Karabay’s 2016 record of 142 hours, 42 minutes, 42 seconds. While the new record hasn’t been officially recognized by the Guinness Book yet, it is only a matter of time before that happens.
He said that he wanted to go for much longer than 145 hours, and he intended to cross the 150 hours barrier but his medical team pulled him out since they were concerned about his health.
People of his country were there to cheer him on
He had been training for 5 years to achieve this record, and his own personal best was spending 121 hours underwater off the Egyptian coast of Dahab.
When he came out of the water, there were hundreds of his country people there to congratulate him since he refused to complete his challenge anywhere outside his country.
He even got engaged underwater
Saddam Al-Kilany has gone viral in the past for holding his engagement ceremony underwater. Even his fiancee, Dr. Pia Legora, is a fellow diver.
Alenka Artnik made the record for deepest dive ever
There are other records made in the world of deep-sea diving, such as the Slovenian freediver named Alenka Artnik who made the world record for the deepest dive ever by descending 374 feet (114 meters) under the surface of the ocean.
