World Wildlife Day is an attempt to remind humankind about the balance in nature and how it is our responsibility to protect and care for all the species the planet bears. Celebrated on the 3rd of March every year, wildlife activists and organizations spread awareness about what affects wildlife and how to protect it.
Forest life suffers extensively with us accomodating our needs while neglecting nature’s needs. But what most people miss considering is how we need to co-exist with the existing species and not wipe it out. This year’s theme is dedicated to offering suggestions on surviving while staying compliant with wildlife and nature.
Responsibly, we ought to take a look at these facts about World Wildlife Day and this year’s theme, “Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration.”
- The IUCN (Union Conservation of Nature) recently provided the data that over 8,400 species of flora and fauna now enlist in the critically endangered category. If that isn’t scary, over 30,000 more species have also lost their rightful space and have enlisted in the endangered and vulnerable list of species. The result? If things remain the way they are and there’s no action towards protecting these species, then over a million species will touch extinction in the times to come.
- Given the facts cited above and this year’s theme, wildlife activists intend to inform people about the alarming rate of endangered species and to welcome discussions from wildlife enthusiasts and organizations on methods to change the scenario for the better.
- Here’s another fact you probably didn’t know. Coral reefs protect our land and us from the big waves and also the predators. Additionally, its contribution to the global economy is over 172 billion. Not just humans, but coral reefs also support marine life. And yet, they’re endangered. Sad, but true!
- It was in the year 2013 when the UNGA (United Nations General Assembly) declared this date as World Wildlife Day to spread awareness among people on the protection of wild animals and plants.
- In 2018, a group of scientists working at London’s Natural History Museum discovered over 270 new species. These include varieties of frogs, beetles, and also some types of animals from extinct animals like dinosaurs and sharks!
But the greatest fact among all of these is the point where we began, safeguarding all species on this planet is our responsibility, and we should act upon it. More delay will cause a greater imbalance in our environment and food cycles, and the consequences may not be good for the planet.
