What Causes Chapped Lips and How to Treat Them?

This is something we all have experienced- chapped lips. Chapped, or cracked, lips is the term commonly used to describe dry lips. Chapped lips can be caused by several factors, that include:

What Causes Chapped Lips?

Lips don’t contain oil glands like other parts of the skin. This means lips are more susceptible to drying out and becoming chapped (cracked). Lack of moisture can make the problem worse, whether it’s weather-induced or related to a lack of self-care.

Little humidity in the air during winters causes chapped lips. Frequent exposure to the sun in summer can worsen your condition.

Another common cause of chapped lips is habitual licking. Saliva from the tongue can further strip the lips of moisture, causing more dryness.

How To Get Rid Of Chapped Lips?

  1. Don’t lick – Licking your lips only dries them out more. Since saliva evaporates quickly, your lips are drier than before, after you lick them than they were before.
  2. Don’t use flavored lip balms- When you put tasty things on your lips, you’re tempted to lick. While flavored lip balms may be fun, they can lead to a dry, cracked mouth which is no fun at all.
  3. Use sunscreen-  If you’re planning on a day in the sun, use a lip balm with sunscreen. It will help keep your lips from getting burned and dried and also prevents peeling that can occur afterward.
  4. Cover your mouth when you step out – Cold air dries your lips. Covering them with a scarf when you head out into brutal temperatures can help keep them protected.
  5. Stay hydrated, inside and out – Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, which can lead to dry skin and lips.
