Most of us are pretty disappointed with Game Of Thrones Season 8 and it’s finale and for a good reason. I mean even the original creator of the story was allegedly sad about the ending.
Here’s what RR Martin, the author of the series of books called “A Song in Ice and Fire” on which the Game Of Thrones is loosely based on; had to say to the company in a recent interview.
The series has been… not completely faithful. Otherwise, it would have to run another five seasons. You know, it’s complex. I’m a little sad, actually. I wish we had a few more seasons. It can also be… traumatic. Because sometimes their creative vision and your creative vision don’t match, and you get the famous creative differences thing — that leads to a lot of conflict.
George R.R Martin
Martin completed 5 of the 7 planned book series but the tv series was way faster than what he expected. The show outpaced the books from the 6th season. Evidently, many fans have noticed the drop in quality of the story since then.
Reasons GoT disappoints
The creative differences are also partly a reason why the show went downhill in storyline quality.
RR Martin added in his interview, “You get totally extraneous things like the studio or the network weighing in, and they have some particular thing that has nothing to do with story, but relates to ‘Well this character has a very high Q Rating so let’s give him a lot more stuff to do.”
HBO and Benioff and Weiss apparently were in a rush to finish off the series and RR Martin was of the opinion that the story needed to take its time. If you notice the last two seasons they really seem rushed with coffee cups and other things left on the set in a hurry.
But that’s not the only problem with the last two seasons!.
Slaughter of Character building
The way characters were treated in the last two seasons was also pretty inconsistent with the other seasons.
The main notable difference between the seasons that followed the book compared to the ones that didn’t was that once complex and well built multi-character show was now a show of only a few main Hero, Heroine and villain. Iconic Characters of Varys the master of whispers, Tyrion Lannister hand of the queen and Jaime Lannister’s incredible redemption from villainhood, had become mere background.
If you feel this was bad..What was done to the character of Daenerys Targaryen was worse. A beloved character of every game of thrones fan whose role was built over 8 seasons falls flat in the finale.
We all remember Daenerys as the savior of slaves and a queen who locked up her dragons when one of her dragons burns a little girl. The same awesome fair queen who always wanted to the right thing now doesn’t even bat her eyes while burning thousands of innocent civilians! What’s worse is the futile justification that they try to come up with in the last episode.
