In a surprising turn of events that has even shocked the British royal family, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced that they are resigning from the British royalty.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a post on Instagram, saying that they are “taking a step back” from their role as the senior Royals. They said they’ll be focusing on gaining financial independence and will be spending more time in North America – rather than living in their home country UK.

In a statement released by the Buckingham Palace, they said:
We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.
In the post, they wrote further that they have reached the final decision of resignation after months of reflection and internal discussions.
Reason behind the resignation might be the rifts in the British royal family
This sudden resignation is being called Megxit, and British royal family is hurt as they both did not even consult the Queen or any other member of the royal family before taking this decision. Harry has said previously that him and his brother Prince William were on “different paths”, and even Meghan Markle has had her differences with Kate Middleton. Now this resignation has given strength to the rumours that there might be a rift in the royal family.
Prince Harry says the decision is to ensure a private and normal life for his son Archie
Harry has said that his decision to step away and out, was taken to protect his family and his child Archie. He talked of his childhood experiences – when his mother Princess Diana suffered a tragic death after being chased by the paparazzi. His childhood and coming of age were severely affected by the media and tabloids snooping in his private life.
He says he wants his son to have a normal life, and that’s why Archie has not been given an official title yet. Meghan also has said that handling pregnancy and motherhood has been hard on her as media keeps her under constant watch, nitpicking and hair-splitting every tiny bit of activity she does – like closing her own car door, or wearing the same fashion brand twice.

The public has begun talking and wondering about the future of Meghan and Harry, and questions have begun floating all around. Will Meghan be starring in the Netflix show “The Crown”? What kind of job will Harry do?
Harry and William do not pay any taxes since they do not have a private income. They have been living off on money provided by the British government’s public funds; and Harry’s father Prince Charles also provides them money that comes in through his private estate the Duchy of Cornwall.
Although, Meghan and Harry have said that they’ll keep receiving money from Prince Charles, who supports almost all of their expenses – but it’s not confirmed whether he will continue doing that after the resignation.
They also have millions of pounds inherited from Princess Diana, but that money is not enough to support the kind of life they both live.
They are not giving up their royal residence
Recently, they had used £2.4 million (about $3 million) of taxpayer money to renovate their royal residence Frogmore Cottage so they are not giving it up, saying that they want to “always have a home in the UK.” Although, they’d need permission from the Queen to continue staying there.
For “work” they might just keep doing charitable work and nothing more
Meghan has said that she will not be going back to acting, as her focus is on doing charitable work and working for women empowerment. It’s also unlikely that Harry will do a job, so he might just focus on his charitable work.
Although, there are certain things – even after resigning, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will keep their royal titles due to historic precedents. They’ll also keep their surname Mountbatten-Windsor.
