11 Food Items You Should NOT Stock In Your Refrigerator

The refrigerator is one of the most brilliant inventions of humans. Think about all the food you can store inside your refrigerator for days that would have rotten otherwise. However, this doesn’t mean you should stock your fridge with all the food. Some food items should not be kept in the refrigerator strictly because of health reasons. These items long laster and better outside the fridge at room temperature and in dry places.  

Do you keep any of these items in the refrigerator?

#1  Ketchup

This may come as a surprise to you but it is not suggestive to keep the bottle of ketchup inside your refrigerator. Ketchup is acidic in nature that prohibits the growth of microorganisms. If you have an open packet or sachet of ketchup that you want to save, you may put it inside the refrigerator to prolong its lifespan.

A lot of people make the mistake of storing honey in the refrigerator. Honey does not go bad for ages. So, there is no need for you to put it in the refrigerator. Besides, it turns into a sugary consistency as it gets crystallised in the low temperature.

Garlic is a kind of stuff that needs ventilation otherwise it becomes molded when kept in closed containers. So, you should store in dry and cool places. A refrigerator is the last thing where you should store garlic.

Does your bread get dry and hard quickly? It is because you are putting it in the refrigerator that crystallizes the starch in it. In fact, it gets stale at a faster rate when kept inside the fridge.

Everybody knows that you should not keep bananas in the refrigerator. Keeping ripe bananas in the fridge makes them go bad fast. If you want to ripen green bananas, keep them in a brown paper bag instead of a refrigerator as they need room temperature to ripen.

Get your avocados out of your refrigerator right away. The same principle applies to avocados as it does in bananas. Keep them at room temperature to ripen or in a brown paper bag with an apple or ripe banana if they are green.

Fruits like apricots and peaches lose their taste and aroma when kept in the refrigerator, if you have ever observed. Before eating, bring these fruits at room temperature to enjoy the full flavor.

Refrigerator won’t keep your fresh herbs fresh for long. In fact, basil turns into a brown mush when you store in low temperatures. It is better to pluck basil for your pasta fresh from the plant. Even if you have to, keep basil leaves still attached to the stem in a glass of water for longer use.

Sames goes with onions. It molds at a faster rate when it is kept in a cold and humid environment. It is because the starch inside the onions turns into sugar. You must store uncut onions inside a mesh bag in a dry place.

Potatoes are rich in starch and I think we have learned by now what happens to starchy food when placed in the refrigerator. Besides potatoes develop eye at a much faster rate in the refrigerator. Just like onions, potatoes should be stored in a dry place.

Olive oil changes its consistency when stored inside the refrigerator. In case you have noticed, it becomes cloudy and thicker in consistency. Rather store it in a cool place with shade.
